BRECAN BREAKFAST AEROBICS KICKS OFF: NEW YEAR, NEW HEALTHY LIFE STYLE.

Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) is a non governmental organization with a mission to eliminate breast cancer as a life threatening disease in Nigeria through public education, patient support, advocacy and research.

In line with the global shift to fight cancer before it starts, BRECAN has come up with a wellness programme named Breakfast Aerobics to promote healthy lifestyle through exercise, energy balanced diet and information. It is a monthly activity scheduled for first Saturday of every month between 7.30am -10.00am. The maiden edition held on Saturday January 7, 2012 at BRECAN centre, 18 Akinyemi Way, Ring Road, Ibadan was attended by 14 participants.

The programme started at 7.45am after registration of participants .The participants were people from different walks of life including students, professionals, business owners , retired civil servants and survivors with age range from twenty to seventy.

The aerobics instructor started with easy exercise for warm-up and coordination. Melodious music synchronized the dancing steps which created a lot of excitement and fun. As the tempo of the exercise increased the participants were sweating and began to feel the impact of the exercise. After an hour of rigorous exercise the participants’ facial expressions revealed relief from body pains due to the exercise but at the same time felt good about loosening stiff body joints and starting the year with a new approach to health and well-being.

The health talk was anchored by Dr Yinka Griffin, the Chief Medical Director of Teju Specialist Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan who provided insight on two areas : (1) Healthy living habits. (2) Cancer risk factors and prevention. The session was interactive with participants fully engaged with the discussion. Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, Founder/President of BRECAN, disclosed to the participants that the issue of breast cancer has gone beyond awareness to advocacy urging the government to appreciate the role of research in planning for cancer intervention. She also sought the partnership of the private sector to fight against the menace of breast cancer through the support of BRECAN programmes that directly touch the lives of breast cancer patients and their families. Suggestions on how to increase public participation in the fight against cancer in Nigeria were discussed noting that cancer messages imbedded in drama could rally people to the cause.

The highlight of the programme was the survivor’s story of Mrs Oliva Ohanaja who went down the memory lane of her breast cancer experience. Showing that BRECAN cares, Mr Biyi Adesanya, a BRECAN Ambassador presented to her a survivor’s handbag and a cheque of ten thousand naira only (N10,000.00). In addition, BRECAN information resource got a boost by AIhaji Murina’s donation of five copies of his book, “Pillar to Post” that captured his ordeal as a caregiver to his wife who lost her life to breast cancer.

The participants were served with healthy breakfast comprising sandwich, vegetable roll, smoothies (of fresh fruits), tea, coffee and bottled water. The aerobics programme came to a close at 10.30 am with a vote of thanks by BRECAN President.

The next edition is on Saturday February 4, 2012.

Oh yes! We jogged in style yesterday (15/10/11), looking very sweet in Pink. However, we must not be carried away by the euphoria that we have successfully carried out our annual ritual of jogging, understandably, to raise awareness. The fact still remains that breast cancer is on rampage in this country but sadly only few are aware or cared. Our women are dying needlessly mainly due to ignorance. You wonder, hello, is any one listening to our message? It breaks my heart that after all these years of awareness programmes by BRECAN and other breast cancer organizations, many Nigerian women when diagnosed with breast cancer choose to go to church for prayers expecting miracles instead of going to the hospital. YOU CANNOT PRAY AWAY LUMP! JOIN ME IN SAYING THIS LOUD AND CLEAR BECAUSE I KNOW FOR SURE. We need to step up in this country by campaigning relentlessly against this mentality of faith without work. I’m appealing to you to raise your voice or use your position in your community , places of work and worship in highlighting the breast cancer burden in Nigeria as the loss of our loved ones continues unabated and why we must act now. Join BRECAN in demanding government to “MAKE BREAST CANCER A HEALTH PRIORITY” which is our theme for this year’s pink October programme in line with the mission of UN Assembly on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

At this time of the year when breast cancer organizations in Nigeria join their counterparts worldwide in rolling out “pink” drums to mark the breast cancer month, it is about time we took a critical look at cancer burden in our environment and identify the challenges responsible for the low impact of available cancer control mechanisms. We have been told time and time again that cancer burden is rising in both developed and developing countries with 7 million people dying of cancer, each year worldwide and close to 11 million new cases diagnosed annually, a figure estimated to rise to a staggering 16 million by 2020. Going by this data, cancer claims twice as many lives as AIDS accounting for more than 12% of all deaths every year. That’s more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria put together!

“Cancer in the developing world is a disaster waiting to happen” a former UICC’s President, Franco Cavalli once said. He continued that “ by 2020, 70% of cancer deaths will be in developing countries where incidence is rising rapidly but resources for prevention and treatment are severely limited”. While the picture may appear bleak, it is a wake-up call for these countries to act now before it is too late. Nigeria , like other developing countries is witnessing a rising incidence of cancers with its problems of ignorance, poverty and communicable diseases yet unsolved. Whereas some countries in this league seek to confront the situation by at least recognizing cancer as a health priority and deploying some resources, Nigeria appears indifferent as cancer never appears on the radar screen of health priorities of the government. Consequently, there is a lack of development of cancer treatment facilities, cancer professionals, public education and patient support services. This apparent neglect is responsible for the unabated late presentation, wrong diagnosis ( for example, incompetent Nigerian doctors who diagnose a breast lump as a “boil”), mutilating surgery, lack of accurate, supporting databases such as cancer registries, insensitivity of doctors and other care givers to the plight of patients, and exploitation of patients by over billing. What do we have? Needless deaths of unknown figure. To a Nigerian, cancer is “that condition which cannot be cured”. Some have reasoned that this stigma may be responsible for an undue sense of fatalism that could adversely impact on the commitment of the government, health agencies and private institutions in the fight against cancer. But what about elsewhere? Cancer research is constantly improving diagnosis, early detection and treatment . Many cancers are now picked up at an early stage when treatments can be more effective. Mammography for early breast cancer detection is a good example. Emerging targeted therapies are increasingly showing the possibility that even late-stage cancers can be controlled and in some cases cured. The effect of these scientific and technological developments is that mortality from cancer will decrease and survival rates improve, despite the increasing incidence. With the unprecedented progress in cancer research in the last 25 years (in the Western world, of course), we now have the opportunity to tap from these advances in a cost-effective way in order to tackle our cancer burden .

The way forward? In my opinion, is to admit that Nigeria has a cancer burden, assess it and set out to control and reduce the burden. Cancer control being a public health approach aimed at reducing the burden of cancer in a population must be taken seriously by the government. Enough of the fire brigade approach where projects are executed without adequate information and planning. It must be emphasized that planning integrated, evidence- based and cost effective interventions throughout the cancer continuum (from research to prevention, early detection, treatment, palliative care) is the most effective way to tackle the cancer problem and reduce the suffering caused to patients and their families. In poor resourced country like Nigeria , a plan should identify its limitations followed by the priorities and specific actions it should take to reduce its cancer burden. For example, in the absence of mammography machines, Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) can be used as a primary screening modality. It has become a cliché to say “government cannot do it alone” but it is true. I submit that where government is giving disproportionate attention to other health priorities such as HIV/AIDS and malaria ( because donor agencies say so), NGOs can play a critical leadership role in increasing public awareness of the cancer problem and in developing effective partnership that can take on the responsibility of cancer planning for effective interventions.

BRECAN joined other cancer organisations world wide in marking 2011 World Cancer Day urging our immediate communities to take part in all actions to fight cancer and raise the profile of the disease for everyone to realise that it kills more people than AIDS, malaria and TB combined! We had a fantastic outing with our host school , the Kambridge Comprehensive College, Ring Road Ibadan. Dr Demola Adebanjo of Dept of Surgery, University College Hospital, Ibadan was the speaker on cancer awareness and prevention. The key messages were: 1. the need to reduce risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption and obesity through healthy lifestyle (whereby the students were advised to say no to tobacco/cigarette smoking and alcohol and say yes to eating fruits and vegetables); 2. urging government to put in place effective cancer control programmes, 3. creating access to vaccination for virus causing cancers such human papiloma that causes cervical cancer and 4. promoting grassroots enlightenment programmes for a better informed public. The speaker knew his audience, made his language simple and communicated effectively with the students. The highlight was the signing of the declaration forms "to help bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of government leaders and policymakers in order to significantly reduce the global cancer burden by 2020" which will become part of supporters for a Cancer Free World and will be presented to the world's leaders at the first UN Summit for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD's) in September 2011. Four media houses were present. We all had fun learning about cancer.

BRECAN Founder/President, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is attending the 33rd Annual San Antonio Breast cancer Symposium (SABCS), joint presentation of the Cancer Therpay & Research Center (CTCR) at the university of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and Baylor College of Medicine. The conference which started on December 8, 2010 will provide participants the opportunity for over 4 days to learn about new clinical information for immediate use in their practices, as well as cutting-edge ideas and technologies that may transform breast cancer treatment in future. Mrs Anyanwu-Akeredolu is participating as a Patient Advocate with a travel scholarship from Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation which offers a special Patient Advocate Program within the conference.

Subsidized mammography test at UCH

In the spirit of Pink October, the University College Hospital (UCH) subsidized mammo test from N6000 to N2000, a welcomed development that attracted scores of women around Ibadan. Some BRECAN members took advantage of the reduced fee to undergo the test today not minding the 9 hours they waited for their turn. Hopefully, the huge patronage which is a sign of increased awareness will compel the hospital authority to procure more machines to reduce hours of waiting.

BRECAN Jog for Life is a project of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria , a non-governmental organization with a mission to eliminate breast cancer as a life threatening disease in Nigeria through public education, patient support, advocacy and research. In Nigeria, the perception of breast cancer as a disease that has no cure is deeply entrenched. Worse still are the myths and false beliefs about what causes breast cancer and how it can be treated. These myths and misconceptions are responsible for, to a large extent, the poor clinical outcomes in most hospitals in the country. In an effort to change this mindset and prove that breast cancer is not a death sentence, BRECAN created an innovative, fun-filled outdoor event called Jog for Life to raise the profile of breast cancer and galvanise a collective action to reduce suffering and untimely deaths caused by the disease. As the name implies, Jog for Life entails an early morning jogging through a designated route of about 5 km, starting at 7.00am prompt . T-shirts and caps are made specially for the event and sold to the public. Participants include breast cancer survivors with family members and friends, sponsors, invited guests and the concerned public. A special guest of honour usually a notable woman leads the joggers. At the finish point, BRECAN, sponsors and special guest of honour make brief remarks. Other attractions include luminaria ceremony (where luminaria are decorated with the names of survivors and those who lost the fight to breast cancer), aerobics, wall of hope , raffle draw and free medical screening including breast exam. Participants are treated to a light refreshment with the event lasting for about two hours What started in Ibadan with less than 100 participants in 2002 when nobody wanted to talk about breast cancer has grown to be an event that is now held in at least three cities every October (the breast cancer awareness month) where over 5000 dynamic and diverse participants register to take action against breast cancer. Apart from raising awareness, Jog for Life has been critical in fundraising for BRECAN Hope Lodge “a home away from home” for breast cancer out-patients and their care givers traveling to the University College Hospital, Ibadan for treatment/check-up as well as serving as a platform to celebrate survivorship and promote exercise as a healthy life-style.

Awareness without access to treatment and care is a wasted effort

The Founder and President of BRECAN, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu submitted that breast cancer awareness without access to treatment and care was a wasted effort. This was her view during a chat with a radio Nigeria reporter on the activities of BRECAN for the Pink October. She urged the government, corporate bodies and well-meaning Nigerians to support NGOs championing the cause by funding programmes aimed at reducing suffering and untimely deaths caused by the disease. Women were advised to be breast aware and take charge of their breast health by doing a simple self examination or hi-tech examination involving mammography given that when breast cancer is detected early, the chances for surviving the disease are greatly improved.

A lot of things run through the mind of a person when a diagnosis of cancer is made.
Cancer thought by many people in our environment is a spiritual attack or punishment for wrong deeds. To some people it’s a mystery and to others a death sentence.
Cancer simply put is when ‘good cells go bad’. It could also be as a result of when tissue/cells are in wrong location that is not in their normal sites.

A cancer cell on its own doesn’t become malignant unless it is repeatedly exposed to the environment like exposure to U.V light, cigarette smoke, infective organisms, toxins, chemicals etc

A normal cell has a nucleus (power house of the cell) which contains chromosomes that are made up of genes. Genes are made up of numerous double helical structures, DNA, that have on each strand materials which codes for our genetic makeup. When there’s a change in the arrangement of these substances, there is a change in genetic information therefore producing bad protein needed for cellular growth. As this continues, there is abnormal cell growth and proliferation.
There are six hallmarks of a cancer cell:

• Generation of own growth signal freeing them from growth constraints normal cells have.
• Ignores signal not to grow like normal cells.

• Evading apoptosis (programmed cell death): Cancer cells have acquired the ability to stay alive unlike normal cells that receive message when their time is up.
• Limitless replication potential
• Tissue invasion/metastasis: The ultimate achievement of cancer cells. This is when cells are able to invade surrounding and distant tissue. It is responsible for 90% of all human cancer deaths.
• Sustained angiogenesis: Angiogenesis is the process by which blood vessels are formed. Cancer cells can trigger this process which allows the tumour sustain itself.
These hallmarks have created pathways for cancer treatment.

Young women Speak!

So i asked around, or might I dare say coerced a couple of women, most of them between the ages of 18 and 24 about what they know of breast cancer, their reactions and anything they can comment on relating to the disease. Sure this Blog is for the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, nonetheless, I guess you could say i cheated and asked any and every woman i know, Nigerian or not.

The results, which will be trickling in over the coming weeks are posted below unedited...

P.S. It is funny when most times, Ladies feel uncomfortable when a guy asks them about breast cancer. Whether its via some social network or in person, I must say their reactions are interesting. I should look into recording some video sometime. I digress! Back to the matter at hand.
